Unified Communications: The Next Dimension
NCC Guidelines - Volume 4 - Number 5
Since the first trading enterprise was established, businesses have depended on collaboration between colleagues, customers and partners. For centuries, collaboration was a matter of face-to-face contact, couriers and eventually post, followed in the last century by the telephone, the telegram, fax and then email.
This encompasses a lot of technological innovation, but all these methods are still essentially the ‘first dimension’ of collaboration because they are sequential exchanges of data.
However, the collaborative experience has evolved. It is now enriched with the addition of video – the second dimension of collaboration – which gives us improved engagement with colleagues, and enables information transfer in real time. However, videoconferencing only goes so far, and this is where there is a gap.
After all, what’s the point of being able to hear and see each other if presentations, meeting notes and other materials still need to be created by hand on a flipchart or whiteboard and shared after the meeting?
Unified communications (UC) – the third dimension of collaboration – allows users to share applications alongside voice and video, closing this gap and improving engagement still further.
