Outsourcing: fighting the fear

'What keeps you awake at night?' is an old sales question, but as the speed of change in IT increases it's becoming more and more relevant. The spectre of risk is what keeps us awake in the small hours and, for those IT leaders who have outsourced, it's the risk of losing control of their destinies.

Loss of control can manifest itself in several ways with outsourcing: fear of being locked-in with no exit route; fear of paying too much; fear of missing out on new technology because of inflexible contracts; fear of being in a relationship that just doesn’t work.

Of course IT outsourcing (ITO) continues to be a vital option for technology leaders, with Gartner predicting additional global growth this year and adjusting its forecasts up for 2014. The outsourced option in any particular case may well be better than the inhouse alternative – but the very act of outsourcing and signing on the dotted line puts a weight of personal responsibility on the person holding the pen.
