With the relentless pressures on costs continuing for the foreseeable future it is time for organisations to think more strategically about the role and impact of technology to deliver true business transformation with improvements to the bottom line.
Many organisations have dabbled with ‘smart office’ and flexible working initiatives but few have yet achieved serious business benefits. There have been many false starts and initiatives showing little return on the often considerable investments in technology and at worst some alienation of staff and management.
Success is clearly not just about getting the right technology solutions but having a clear business focussed strategy, and implementing new processes that have the full support of management and staff through effectively managing cultural change.
The first half of the session will focus on:
- A ‘realistic approach’ to achieving business benefits
- Changing culture to get management and staff on board
- Examples of the pitfalls to avoid
- Some of the Critical Success Factors to consider
The second part of this session will focus on assessing the strategic technology requirements….
The truth is, that it's not really about technology, its about people... Technology is just a means to an end, a way of achieving a specific result, not a result in itself. In most cases there is no right solution and as many IT Directors, IT Managers and helpdesk staff will testify, deciding on the technology first can often be a recipe for disaster.
So if the rest of the company have already figured out that different users often have different skill-sets, different business requirements, different responsibilities and different working patterns, why start with a single ‘chosen’ technology path and try to shoehorn it across the business?
Amongst all of this complexity, the only thing we can be sure of is that everybody expects instant access to company information at any time, from any device, from anywhere. So how do you build an infrastructure that scales from powerful desktops with fast network connections and huge screens, right down to low power mobile devices with limited connectivity, battery life and smaller screens?
First we will provide a blue print – some questions to ask yourself about your business and the people who work in it – and from there the technology requirements should just leap off the page...

He will draw on his experiences since 2000 in helping organisations to deliver business centred flexible working. He will provide a blue print for the cultural change that will be required – and will share many of the pitfalls to avoid.

Jason will provide a technology strategy roadmap…. which will enable you to fully assess where you are now, where you need to be – and how to navigate the journey. Jason is a strategic thinker but has a hands on approach to delivering business driven and business aligned technology solutions. He has operated as Head of IT for a number of businesses across public and private sector and is a highly experienced technical architect.

Jason Meers - is an NCC Associate Consultant and senior consultant at One Planet Computing and has been working in Server virtualisation and Desktop virtualisation since 2001. Jason has been working with the NCC to develop thin client solutions and best practice guidelines since 2005, and also writes articles for ITadviser on low-carbon computing and Green IT.
He has worked as an independent advisor to the Cabinet Office and the Conservative party, and reviewed the “Greening Government ICT” policy, as well as co-writing the current Conservative IT strategy around Open Standards, Open Source and software re-use in the public sector.
After spending several years working as Head of IT for a group of UK companies, Jason became a technical architect and product specialist working in the public sector for Serco PLC, before his current role at One Planet Computing in 2009. One Planet Computing is a Green IT company that helps organisations to reduce the environmental impact of IT equipment, by extending the working life of existing computers, laptops and legacy thin clients through the use of modern Virtual Desktop technologies from Microsoft, Citrix and VMware.
John Eary, Director, JEC Professional Services Ltd.
John is a senior Management Consultant who has managed major assignments for the commercial and not-for-profit sectors, in the UK and internationally. John has a strong track record in advising organisations on new ways of working and exploiting ICT effectively. Since 2000 John has managed many assignments in the adoption of Remote and Flexible Working in the IT Services, Local Government, Education, and Charity sectors.
