NCC Think Tank: Preparing for the Cloud

07 October 2010

The NCC Think Tank is a series of research projects whose themes are identified by the Members Advisory Board. The Think Tank brings together IT decision-makers, industry figures and NCC researchers to identify how best to address emerging issues.

This Think Tank will address:

“How to manage towards a cloud based future state (including supplier's proprietary clouds), given legacy infrastructure, line of business supporting solutions and downwards budget pressures?”

It seems very likely that adding something 'cloud' to your IT infrastructure map is on the radar if it isn’t there already... But what are the implications for how you manage the inevitable collection of parts on premise and off? How do you get from 'here' to 'there', with the added pressure to be both 'innovative' and 'more cost effective' along the way?

Some solutions approaches cover some or all of this scope including:

  • The Microsoft 'Software & Services' model
  • The Google Chrome OS 'Gateway to Web Apps' model
  • The IBM 'variation?'
  • Enterprise Apps Store(s) as new sources of Line of Business apps-based IT/IS services

In this Think Tank session we'll discuss the pros and cons of these options (and others) as a means to explore, perhaps provide, outline solutions to the broad question posed above.
