Maintaining service levels with reduced budgets is biggest challenge for IT decision-makers

The results of a new survey from the National Computing Centre (NCC) paint a challenging picture for the UK IT management community. When asked what was their most pressing issue in the current economic climate, most cited ‘maintaining service levels with reduced budgets’, this was closely followed by the challenge of ‘aligning IT more closely with the rest of the business.’ 182 IT decision-makers were polled in July 2010.
The survey was intended to provide a snapshot of IT concerns and opportunities now that the new Coalition Government has started to implement their policies.
Steve Fox, Managing Director at NCC said, “IT decision-makers are being forced to review their strategy in light of prevailing economic conditions, over 70% identified this as a current concern. The message for IT decision-makers is that you are not alone and applying that knowledge can give you leverage with your current suppliers.”
The survey reveals that the public sector are more concerned with maintaining service levels with reduced budgets, whilst the private sector see heightened alignment with the business as the greatest priority. Both groups wish to make IT more innovative, but cloud computing was only ranked sixth amongst the most important emerging technologies.
“Moving to the cloud is interesting and tempting, especially as solutions promise attractive benefits and are becoming more mature, but the indications are that governance, continuity, security and the implications of radical change need to be thought through before cloud is viable option.” Said Steve.
Virtualisation of infrastructure is the most popular emerging technology, closely followed by Microsoft’s SharePoint collaboration tool and then mobile technologies. Whilst organisations are reviewing how they spend their budget, they are not throwing the baby out with the bath water. Ensuring data security and continuity both ranked highly as essential activities.
“Customer Relationship Management vendors may feel more comfortable knowing that despite cuts the public sector still sees CRM projects as worthwhile. On the other hand, Enterprise Resource Planning vendors maybe more sanguine about the lack of enthusiasm for ERP in the public sector and smaller businesses.” concluded Mr. Fox.
